What should we record to make a useful before-and-after energy comparison?

Discussion started ·

Record energy in kWh as well as pounds, the tariff dates, occupancy and any major change in comfort or usage. For heating, note that a colder winter can change demand. Separate measured results from an installer’s forecast. REH suggests sharing a small, anonymised summary so others can understand the comparison without seeing your bill, address or account details. Join the discussion: Which improvement are you measuring, and what comparable re...

How can we check a heat pump installer before paying a deposit?

Discussion started ·

Check the company and applicable certification through the relevant official registers, and ask who will design, install and commission the system. Read the written scope, payment schedule, warranties and complaint arrangements. GOV.UK explains MCS certification and consumer protection schemes for heat pump installers. Registration is useful evidence, but you still need a clear design, contract and realistic performance assumptions. Join the d...

Can we charge an EV cheaply without buying a home battery as well?

Discussion started ·

A separate home battery is not automatically needed to benefit from scheduled EV charging. A compatible charger, vehicle and suitable tariff may let the car charge directly during cheaper periods. Check the available window, required energy and the tariff’s other rates. Compare that simpler arrangement before adding storage whose cost needs its own justification. Join the discussion: How much charge do you normally need overnight, and which ta...

[REH editorial] What should we check before getting a home EV charger quote?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK; electrical supply and local requirements vary. Give the installer your parking arrangement, vehicle, daily mileage and where the charger would go. Ask what electrical assessment, cable route, groundworks and supply-related work are included, and whether the equipment suits your intended tariff. Compare the installed scope and ongo...

[REH editorial] Does the October 2026 price cap tell us what a heat pump will cost to run?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Great Britain; default tariffs; October–December 2026. No. Ofgem’s cap controls default-tariff unit rates and standing charges; it is not a ceiling on a household’s total bill. Running costs still depend on consumption, location, payment arrangement and system performance. Use your actual rates when comparing heating options, and reco...

[REH editorial] How do we compare a smart tariff for solar, a battery or a heat pump?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Great Britain; supplier and meter eligibility apply. Compare the whole bill using when you actually consume and export electricity. Cheap overnight units may be offset by a higher daytime rate, standing charge or less attractive export terms. Test realistic schedules and include any equipment losses. A tariff that suits an EV owner wh...

[REH editorial] Will a smart meter itself reduce our bills?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Great Britain; confirm arrangements separately in Northern Ireland. It provides readings and better visibility of consumption; the saving comes from what you change or the tariff you can use. Smart meters can support time-of-use offers, but a suitable tariff and usage pattern still matter. If a reading, display or connection is wrong,...

[REH editorial] Where should a Northern Ireland household start when looking for energy grants?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Northern Ireland only. Use Northern Ireland’s own advice and grant routes. nidirect brings together energy-saving support, including links to relevant local programmes. Do not assume that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, England’s Warm Homes Local Grant or Great Britain’s export arrangements apply. Check the current scheme, property require...

[REH editorial] What is Nest in Wales, and how is it different from getting a private quote?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Wales only. Nest is a Welsh Government route for advice and, for eligible households, a package of home energy improvements. Its guidance includes measures such as insulation, heat pumps and solar panels, subject to assessment. Contact the scheme to establish eligibility and the appropriate work. A quote from an installer is not evide...

[REH editorial] We live in Scotland. Should we use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — Scotland only. For a Scottish home, start with Home Energy Scotland rather than the England-and-Wales Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Its grant and loan offer has separate rules. The current guidance lists up to £7,500 grant support for eligible clean heating, with optional interest-free lending and further conditions. Check the full offer and...

[REH editorial] Who can apply for the Warm Homes Local Grant in England?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — England only. GOV.UK says the home must be privately owned, in England and normally rated EPC D to G. Household income is usually £36,000 or less, with other routes based on qualifying benefits or postcode. Support depends on eligibility, council funding and a survey. The council arranges agreed improvements; it is not a cash grant to...

[REH editorial] Does the Warm Homes Plan mean everyone can get free solar or a heat pump?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK policy context; individual schemes have different geographic coverage. No. The plan brings together different forms of support, including targeted low-income programmes and consumer finance. A policy announcement is not an approval for a particular household. Identify the actual scheme, its geographic coverage, eligibility and appl...

[REH editorial] Will draught proofing make our home too airtight?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK. The aim is controlled ventilation, not accidental gaps. As unwanted draughts are reduced, check that kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces still have suitable ventilation. Existing damp or condensation is a reason to assess the whole situation rather than seal more openings. Ask the installer how the proposed work will maintain fr...

[REH editorial] Should we insulate first, fit a heat pump, or start with solar?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK; support varies by nation. Begin with the problem you want to solve: cold rooms, high heating demand or expensive electricity. Reducing avoidable heat loss can improve comfort and influence the heating design. Solar addresses electricity generation, so it is not a substitute for fixing a cold, damp building. Ask for a staged plan s...

[REH editorial] We have condensation and mould. Should insulation be the first job?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK. First establish the cause. Condensation, a roof leak and penetrating damp need different responses, and more than one problem can exist. Insulation may form part of the solution, but it should not hide an unresolved moisture defect. Ask for an assessment covering the building fabric, heating and ventilation before agreeing a packa...

[REH editorial] Which draughts should we seal, and which vents must stay open?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK. Deal with unwanted gaps around doors, windows and floors while preserving intentional ventilation. Do not block air bricks, trickle vents, flues or ventilation needed by appliances. A warmer home still needs a way to remove moisture and maintain air quality. If you are unsure what an opening does, identify it before sealing it. J...

[REH editorial] For a solid-wall home, is internal or external insulation the better choice?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK; heritage and planning constraints vary. Neither is automatically best. Internal insulation affects room space and finishes; external insulation changes the outside of the building. Both need careful detailing around openings and junctions, and a plan for moisture. Ask how existing defects will be repaired and what permissions or s...

[REH editorial] How can we tell whether cavity wall insulation is suitable for our house?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK; suitability is property-specific. Start with a survey confirming the wall construction, cavity condition and exposure, rather than assuming from the building’s age. Existing damp, defects or water ingress need investigation before insulation is specified. Ask for the suitability findings, proposed material, installation scope and...

Can we keep loft storage without squashing the insulation?

Discussion started ·

Storage and insulation need to be planned together. Compressing insulation or blocking ventilation is not a good way to make space. Ask for an appropriate boarding and access arrangement that accommodates the insulation and allows checks of the roof space. A loft intended as a habitable room is a different project from insulating the floor of a cold storage loft. Join the discussion: Is your priority a small access path, occasional storage or...

[REH editorial] Is topping up loft insulation still worthwhile if there is already some there?

Discussion started ·

REH editorial starter discussion. Prepared by REH to invite genuine community replies. REH starter discussion — UK. It may be. Check the depth, material, coverage and condition before choosing a top-up. Around 270mm is a common mineral-wool reference, not a universal depth for every product or roof. Ventilation, access, electrical fittings and any damp need attention too. Ask for the proposed specification and the difference it should make comp...
